Experts say that Newton only put indigo in the rainbow because he wanted seven colors, and indigo was an extremely valuable commodity at the time.īut many believe that what Newton called “blue” was closer to the modern “aqua,” a mix between blue and green, and that his “indigo” was what we’d call “blue” today. Today, the color “indigo” refers to a blue-purple color that many people can’t actually distinguish from blue or purple. They want to define it as: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Today, many color specialists advocate for removing indigo from the colors of the rainbow. Modern Color Wheel Controversy: What Is Indigo Doing In There? The musical scale has seven notes, and Newton decided to define seven distinct colors as well. Newton decided to divide the rainbow into seven colors because he believed seven was a cosmically significant, even “magic” number. ![]() It’s a shortcut your brain takes so it doesn’t have to work as hard. The only reason we see a rainbow made up of bands of color at all is because human perception prefers to organize stimuli into distinct “buckets” rather than dealing with a spectrum. The way you see color depends upon the context, your culture, and the language you have to talk about color. Indigo was a major commodity at the time, and it would have been recognizable to Newton's contemporaries. So what is indigo doing in the color wheel? Newton's distinctions and color names were somewhat arbitrary, as is the nature of color in general. He divided the indistinct continuum of color into seven distinct, visible colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Illustration of Newton's dual prism experiment, from his 1671 letter to the Royal Society. He demonstrated that light could be divided by use of a prism, then reunited with another prism. Indigo fever even had an impact on science and physics that lasts to this day! In the mid 17th century, Sir Isaac Newton was proving that white light comprised a full spectrum of colors. Demand for the dye fueled trade wars, propelled the slave trade, and partially financed the American Revolutionary War. It became an incredibly valuable resource in Europe through the Middle Ages, becoming only slightly less rare as trade routes opened up throughout the Renaissance. India was the primary source of indigo in the Greco-Roman era, though other Asian countries like China and Japan had also utilized indigo for centuries. ![]() The notoriety of indigo goes back thousands of years, particularly in India, the oldest center of indigo dyeing. Today very few people are involved in the use of Indigofera balls: Among them are Dogon people in Mali and artists such as American Rowland Ricketts who prepares a compost from Persicaria tinctoria which grows in a temperate climate, reviving an old Japanese method of composting the plant material and using it for dye. ![]() ![]() In Europe before the 19th C., the preparation of indigo balls was done by growers using the indigenous woad plant (Isatis tinctoria.) During the 19th century, the old fashioned use of balls was gradually abandoned and replaced by the blue extract, called indigo. In the past, balls of dried Indigofera leaves were available in some West African countries such as Mali and Senegal to be used by local dyers. The leaves are transformed by farmers into a blue extract that is sold to dyers who prepare dye vats with the addition of an alkali (such as lye or lime) and a reducing agent (either chemical like thiourea dioxide or natural such as fructose in powdered form or as the syrup from certain fruits.) What is indigo? The dye is extracted from the leaves of plants in the genus Indigofera, which grow in tropical climates. Indigo is probably the most famous of all natural dyes, and is certainly the most widely used today. Additionally, the death scenes when you fail at something tend to be particularly gruesome (one memorable one is a spike through the head, the image of which will haunt me for a long time to come). This one does not, and Lara is covered in blood for much of the game. Many games these days have the option to turn off blood. One note about Tomb Raider: If you're squeamish about animated gore, this may not be the game for you. Pain Tolerance, Ammo Capacity, Orienteering, and Cartography are also very useful. Personally, I highly recommend getting Arrow Retrieval and Scavenging as early as possible. "Survivalist" in particular helps you get more XP quickly, which is always useful. If you're gung ho on getting as much salvage as possible (which is how you upgrade your weapons), though, then you may want to purchase some of these skills earlier. In terms of leveling up Lara herself, I didn't really do much animal hunting, so a lot of the survivalist skills were useless to me (eventually you get to a point where you have to unlock these skills in order to progress to the next level, but I recommend saving them until the end). The bow and arrow were, by far, the easiest way to do that when you're operating in ranged mode. This is not a hand-to-hand combat game, and you can get pretty far by being stealthy and killing quietly. After that, I upgraded even further to napalm arrows, which, as you can imagine, were an excellent choice. Two quick shots in succession were enough to dispatch most enemies, which made things much easier. Once I acquired fire arrows, I found that instead of four to five arrows to secure a kill, it was more like two or three. After that, I worked on upgrading my archery tools to be able to use fire arrows. My first priority for any weapon was ensuring I could carry as much ammo as possible, even if it wasn't my go-to (I'm nothing if not an anxious gamer). Specifically, if you feel the same way I do about the bow and arrow, then plan on upgrading this weapon in particular. Second, while it did take a few arrows to kill an enemy (unless you perfected the headshot, which has never been my forte), leveling up your archery tools makes a big difference. That made me start defaulting to the bow and arrow, especially because I found it much easier to be precise with these than with the guns. However, because you can carry a lot more arrows than firearm ammunition, I very rarely found myself running out of arrows. While the game doesn't restrict ammunition much (a byproduct of Easy Mode - ammo drops are frequent and plentiful), there were definitely long firefights where I ran out of ammo in one (or more) of the guns. You get plenty of other weapons - a rifle, a shotgun, a handgun - but the bow and arrow were my preferred weapon as an Easy Mode gamer. I'll be honest, in this game, I was a real bow and arrow fan. I found it better to run (especially from the wolves) and avoid as much battle as possible until I had the bow and arrow in hand. The combat is pretty simple for the most part, but until you get a good weapon, it can be quite difficult. There is an Easy Mode option from the start, so once you select that, you're plunged into the gameplay. Right off the bat, I was taken in by Tomb Raider. As a result, I was a little hesitant, but I'd heard so many good things about the new (or, "new to me," considering this game is close to a decade old at this point) iteration of this game, so I wanted to give it a try. My memories of playing Tomb Raider when I was younger consist of (a) the Angelina Jolie movies and (b) playing for approximately five minutes on a PC, being eaten to death by wolves, and never picking up the game again. ![]() When I found the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition remaster of the 2013 game on sale, I knew that it was time to finally delve into this franchise. Because I skipped the PS3 entirely - I didn't play games for a long time because Easy Mode was not as ubiquitous as it is now - there are quite a few I have to catch up on. There aren't a lot of new games coming out, which makes it the perfect time to revisit older titles. Right now, we're in that weird lull between console versions, as the PS5 (and Xbox Series X, if you prefer that console - we'll have one of each most likely, because my husband is an Xbox gamer and I am not) is almost here. Take It Easy Mode is a bi-weekly column on the unsung hero of video games, the Easy setting, for casual and new gamers, parents, and people who generally find higher difficulty modes frustrating. That duality is part of the Chicano experience and, in consequence, is part of the Cinco de Mayo celebration. I was born in San Diego and my son was born in Utah, in lands that in the past belonged to Mexico.įor me and for many Chicanos like Zaragoza, our history proves the phrase, “We didn’t cross the border, but the border crossed us.” My late great-grandfather José Navarro Paniagua and my late grandfather Francisco Navarro Gallegos were born in Mexico, and during the bracero years, they both emigrated and worked under the sun in California’s Central Valley they eventually moved to Tijuana, where my father, José Francisco Navarro Zamora, was born. Once I learned that background, I felt I had found a genuine reason to join the Cinco de Mayo celebration, and I compared what I know of my family history with Zaragoza’s. More recently, in 1980, his statue was placed in the Goliad State Park and Historic Site southeast of San Antonio. Increasingly, the battle’s anniversary was celebrated by Texans and Mexicans, and by communities in both countries. He received a Mexican meritorious recognition, and his name was written in golden letters in the Mexican Congress. Soon after, the French army again invaded Mexico, but Zaragoza’s victory had already turned him into a legend. 8, 1862, the same year as his victory against the French. ![]() Zaragoza became seriously ill with typhoid fever and died on Sept. Texas eventually won its independence and became the Republic of Texas, joining the union as the 28th state in 1845. ![]() Zaragoza grew up in Mexico and enlisted in the Mexican army in 1836. His father was a Mexican soldier and his mother was from Texas. Zaragoza was born on March 24, 1829, in what is now Goliad, Texas, when the region was called Bahía del Espíritu Santo in Mexican territory. He explained that, for some historians, Zaragoza is considered the first historical Chicano hero. I asked a researcher at Colegio de la Frontera Norte - a Mexican think tank focused on border issues - and his answer transformed the way I feel about the celebration. Years later, as a reporter in 2008, during my first year of covering news from the north side of the border, an editor asked me to write a story about why the Cinco de Mayo celebration was so popular in the United States. If I transport myself back to those years, I associate Cinco de Mayo with a bright sun, the smell of carne asada, and me playing and dancing with my sisters at my grandparents’ house, with loud music blaring from a boombox nearby. Yet in my hometown of Tijuana during the 1990s, the Cinco de Mayo celebration was much less patriotic and way more rowdy, paired with that beer’s vibe.įor a transfronteriza millennial like me, May was the beginning of the warmest season, and during the first week of the month, sarapes and sombreros related to the Cinco de Mayo celebration would be the theme at bars and restaurants “for older people,” especially at those along Avenida Revolución. Zaragoza’s battle report to then-President Benito Juárez was brief but significant: “Las armas nacionales se han cubierto de gloria.” The national arms are covered with glory. He commanded almost 2,000 soldiers and 2,700 Indigenous farmers who wore sarapes and sombreros and used machetes and spear points made of wood and metal to defend their territory against French pistols, bayonets and cannons.
